No 100 Sqn a/c sited what happened to A9-571, however two crews of 8 Sqn RAAF had seen the a/c flying 150 yards inland at a height of 500 feet in the vicinity of Butt jetty when red tracer being observed coming up towards the a/c from some native huts and half way up a steep cliff, which caused the a/c to swerved badly with the port engine catching fire, before it crashed into the sea just off shore in an area of position 032º 45' South /143º 17' East near Wom Point PNG, some two minutes later. The a/c broke in half and became rested 30-50 yards from the water's edge. The crew released the dinghy and intended to head for shore. The Japanese opened up with machine guns and rifle fire, killing the Nav(B) Observer, F/O Sydney Loyis Anderson Serv#410192. The second burst of fire holed the dinghy which started to fill with water. The remaining three crew jumped and started to swim alongside the dinghy and tow it seaward when a third burst of fire severely wounded the pilot F/O Lyle Manhire McLaren Serv#416874 (who died soon after clutching Graetz) and wounded WAG F/O Raymond Arnold Graetz Serv#417175 in right ear. The other WAG, F/Sgt Francis Maloney Serv#410995 was last seen swimming seaward. He was never seen again. Graetz down the coast spent the next 8 days in the jungle trying to return to base, when he was rescued by a US Navy PT Boat.
