Without access to official RAAF records it is not possible to provide an accurate history of each aircraft.

However by searching available photographic and written material a close match can be made, this is what has been done here. If you have access to further information please contact the group.

One of the major hurdles is the fact that some aircraft served with multiple units, or served in the same unit at different locations and times. Another problem is that towards the end of the Mirage service life many aircraft were painted in the colour schemes of Squadrons to which they had never belonged, this was for the purpose of photo shoots. I have seen an aircraft in 76 Sqn. colours parked beside an F/A-18, 76Sqn. disbanded many years before the Hornets came on the scene.

Two distinct versions of the RAAF Mirage were produced, the original III-O(F) ,a pure fighter version A3-1 to A3-50 inclusive. They were originally left in the bare metal finish but corrosion problems saw them painted a silver colour .

From A3-50 onwards they were manufactured as III-O (F/A) the main difference being the inclusion of a CyranoIIB Doppler radar to allow for a ground attack capability.With two exceptions all surviving (F) models were upgraded to (F/A) from June 1969. The exceptions were A3-2 which remained with ARDU for the duration, and had many trials modifications not fitted to the rest of the fleet, and A3-26 which remained in France for the first three years of it’s life as a test bed for the update.

The introduction of a ground attack capability saw the aircraft now painted in a camouflage scheme of dark green / grey overall, this was followed by a lighter shade of green / grey with a light grey underside,

The last variant saw them painted a light blue grey overall.To distinguish friend or foe during air to air combat training some aircraft also had a wide band of yellow or orange paint applied on the upper wing surfaces.

In addition there were No2 OCU based at Williamtown NSW and ARDU based at Laverton Vic then Edinburgh SA

76 Sqn was disbanded in 1973 to allow more aircraft to be shared amongst the other operating units. 75 Sqn returned to Darwin in 1983 to provide a fighter defence for the top end whilst the Hornet Sqns became operational, it absorbed some of the 3 Sqn Mirages , ending up with 21 IIIOs and 4 IIIDs . 79 Sqn had been reformed at Butterworth to absorb the remnants of 3 Sqn’s aircraft and to provide a presence in the area when 3 Sqn returned to Australia to re equip with Hornets in 1986, 77 Sqn still at Williamtown eventually got all the rest of the aircraft including 2OCU’s, in fact taking over that unit’s role of pilot conversion whilst 2OCU changed to Hornets. The eventual strength of 77 Sqn was some 40 Mirages ( plus 16 Macchis )

N/AAvon Mirage The 4th production Mirage IIIC was rebuilt by Dassault France with a Rolls Royce Avon Mk.67 engine. Named "City of Hobart". First flight 13/02/61. Although the Avon produced slightly superior performance and range the SNECMA Atar 9C was selected. After some 45 test flights the Avon was removed, an Atar refitted and the aircraft went on to serve as the Mirage IIIE prototype. It survives today displayed at a museum in Savigny-lès-Beaune, France

  • A3-1Mirage IIIO(F)Built by Dassault France. Received by RAAF London 05/04/1963 with installed ATAR 13003. Flight testing taking place 10/04/1963. Arrived at Avalon from France inside Hercules A97-208 27/11/1963. Officially handed over to the RAAF 29/01/1964. To GAF 25/06/1964. To ARDU 08/07/1964. Crashed 07/12/1964, 2 km from Avalon VIC. During tests at 36,000ft with ARDU a spin developed, pilot was unable to recover and ejected just before impact at 750 knots (supersonic) and at a height of 7000ft. Pilot Sqn Leader Tony Svensson RAF injured seriously. RAAF Ejection number 26.

  • A3-2Mirage IIIO(F)Delivered 22/04/64. Pattern aircraft built by Dassault France. During RAAF service and shortly after takeoff at 6,000 ft engine stopped dead. Flt LT Ron Green turned the aircraft 180 degrees and returned to runway. Recovered ok. Problem was fuel line cap left in which took 4 flights to become evident. Finished RAAF Service with 1957 hours on airframe. Served with ARDU. Richmond Airshow 1988 - last public display of the Mirage in Australia. Storage 1988 at Woomera, Sold to Pakistan Air Force 11/90 and delivered by sea. ROSE (Retrofit of Strike Element) Upgrade 1996.

During the late 90's restoration on the aircraft began. At Amberley 09/01, it was in 76 Sqn markings outside the restoration hanger in an overall aluminium color and red scollops on the intakes similar to the scheme the first aircraft wore when in service.
