the stomach took to their dingy.
Accompanying Beaufighter A8-89
(Pilot: PLTOFF K. W. Sounness &
Nav F/O G R Cant) radioed for
air-sea rescue and circled until
approximately 1000 hours when
relieved by A8-6 (Pilot FLGOFF
Edwards & Nav FLGOFF D.I.
Beasley) and A8-104 (Pilot PLTOFF
T.W. Ellis & Nav PLTOFF Coleman)
who took up station until Catalina
A24-109 piloted by FLTLT W. Mills of
113 ASR Flight landed on the water
at 1115 hours just 300m from shore.
The Catalina suddenly came under
fire from a camouflaged Japanese
watercraft and its blister guns
returned fire. Both Beaufighters
commenced strafing the shoreline. An
engine of A8-104 was disabled by
ground fire but continued to strafe
until the Catalina, which was
slightly damaged, had taken off.
The crew of A8-33 were successfully
rescued and the Navigator recovered

the cockpit. The information came
from a series of photos taken at
Morotai on or after 02/45 and
supplied in 08/03 by Stephen

disintegrated. Pilot unable to

Sarawak. A8-85 was damaged in
starboard engine from flying debris,
dropped behind formation unsighted
by the others and crash-landed in
jungle near Kucing. FLGOFF Sims and
FLGOFF Arrant were missing for 13
days but eventually walked to safety
through Japanese held territory.
Post war it was discovered the ship
sunk was the 'Mia Moan', the private
yacht of the Rajah of Sarawak!

Tarakan. In a downwind landing
A8-195 overran the strip, stopping
on the edge of a creek. Overnight
heavy rain caused the creek bank to
collapse and A8-195 ended up
submerged in the creek. An attempt
to salvage it by bulldozer tore off
the tail and both mainplanes just
outside the engines, along with both
undercarriage legs and it was
abandoned (Parnell p.67 &

developed in an engine. Whilst
returning to Richmond NSW at about
4pm, the aircraft entered a spiral
dive from 4000 feet, one engine
detached and A8-356 crashed near
Clarendon.
Pilot WOFF H.R. Stevens was killed.
This was the last fatality in a
Beaufighter (Parnell p.76).
