Developed from the Hawker Hart bomber to address the Royal Air Force's lack of a fast fighter aircraft, the Demon went into production for the RAF in 1932 with a total of 305 aircraft eventually being manufactured.  In February 1934 the Australian Government ordered 18 Hawker Demon Mk.I aircraft for the RAAF built to UK MoD Specification 1/34 with some additional modifications to suit Australian conditions and powered by the new Rolls Royce 600hp Kestrel Mk V engine. The contract was for a total of 106,000 pounds Sterling or 5,000 pounds per aircraft plus 10 additional engines, spares and specialist tools with deliveries scheduled to begin in Sep 1934.

In August 1934 the UK Government announced that the contracted delivery dates of the aircraft could not be met because Hawker production was geared solely to meet RAF requirements. A revised delivery date of late 1935 or early 1936 was offered but could not be guaranteed until the full RAF order was completed.  However, following strong pressure from the Australian Government, sweetened with a promise of follow-on orders, the 18 RAAF aircraft were delivered by Hawker in late 1934, tested in January 1935 and belatedly delivered in April – May 1935.  The aircraft were issued to No 1 and No 3 Squadrons with Serials A1-1 thru A1-18.

On 31 January 1935 the Minister of Defence announced that 18 additional Demons Serials A1-19 thru A1-36 would be purchased for 126,000 pounds Sterling, including the requisite extra engines, spares and specialist equipment. On 2 July 1935 a further 18 Demons Serials A1-37 to A1-54 were ordered bringing the total order to 54 Mk.I Demons. The additional 36 aircraft were modified for Army Co-operation with a prone bomb aimer’s position for the gunner in the lower fuselage and the fitment of bomb carriers.  The aircraft were also fitted with the 600hp RR Kestrel V DR engine and all 36 were delivered to Australia in 1936.  A final tranche of 10 Demons was ordered in late 1936 with Serials A1-55 thru A1-64; these 10 aircraft were built to Specification 46/36 and were fitted with dual controls and target towing equipment and known as the Australian Demon Mk.II.  Nine of these aircraft were delivered in Oct 1937 and the last aircraft (A1-64) was delivered to Sydney in May 1938.

The 64 RAAF Demons mainly served with Nos 1, 2, 3, 21, 22, 23 and 25 Squadrons.  In service the Demons proved to be a difficult aircraft to fly and were regarded with some trepidation by many novice pilots. The unreliability of the Kestrel engine made maintenance and serviceability a very demanding task and many aircraft spent an inordinate amount of time awaiting spares and/or in maintenance. Despite a rash of mostly minor crashes and reports of doom and gloom gleefully reported by the press of the day only 10 Demons were actually lost between 1935 and 1939 which was a record that was as good as or better than most other fighter aircraft of the time

On the eve of World War II the 54 Demons still in operational service were relegated to the squadron hack, training, communications and target towing roles.  By 1948 the last of the Demons had been converted to components and, as was typical of that era, no complete aircraft was set aside for preservation or display. Fortunately for present day aviation enthusiasts one complete Demon is on permanent display and one is under full restoration to airworthy condition. The aircraft on display at present is A1-8 which crashed in 1937 in rugged bush in NW Tasmania. The wreckage was rediscovered in 1977, airlifted out, restored then placed in the RAAF Museum in 1987. The other aircraft undergoing restoration in Queensland is an amalgam of old parts and new build parts that belonged to no particular aircraft so at this time an identity is unknown.

Postscript:

The crash of A1-33 produced far-reaching upheaval in the administration of the RAAF. As there had been seven Demon mishaps in that one week period, the press maintained that there were problems with either airworthiness or standards of pilot training in the RAAF, notwithstanding evidence that A1-33 had been lost through a simple oversight by the pilot. An insistent, militant campaign mounted by Fallon’s AWU union official father added to the clamour for a public inquiry. This ultimately led to Marshal of the RAF Sir Edward Ellington conducting a visit of inspection in 1938, which led to the removal of the RAAF’s Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice-Marshal Richard Williams.
